How to Build Your Own ADU

Step 1 - DEMO

The first step is Demolishing your garage and prepping the job site for construction. You will learn what you need to know to successfully demolish your garage and begin building your accessory dwelling unit. The first tip is to avoid over-demolishing your garage, prepping the job site correctly, hauling away trash, and not over-demoing the existing stucco.

Step 2 - Underground Mechanical

The second step is Underground Mechanical of your garage and trenching for plumbing, gas and electrical. You will learn what you need to know, where to trench, how deep the trench is, and how to install underground mechanicals. In this video, you learn the importance of knowing where everything is going before starting plumbing because changing underground plumbing becomes expensive.

Step 3 - Foundation

Upon passing inspection, the next step is building and pouring your foundation. In this episode, Joseph reviews building and pouring foundation for an ADU. Emphasizing adding extra layer of concrete to fix uneven slopes. Every project is doable, Joseph and his team have fixed cracked foundations and uneven slopes many times.

Step 4 - Framing Your ADU

Joseph emphasis is on materials, recommending you use basic lumber and avoid over complicating the framing process. There is no need to overbuild your ADU, an ADU doesn’t need to be reengineered. This ADU Garage Conversion uses the existing structure and roof framing. Before designing your ADU it is important to know your existing site conditions. Joseph designed the ADU using the existing roof, saving the homeowner money.
